Navigating the Digital Landscape: A Marketer’s Midlife Journey

Trying to get a job…

After raising two children, living in various places around the world, and having a diverse career in marketing, I found myself at a crossroads. My professional journey has taken me through logistics, transportation, health foods, airlines, loyalty programs, PR, advertising, event management, and more. However, after taking a career break due to relocations where working was challenging, I decided to return to the workforce in the UK, ready to dive back into the only profession I had ever truly known—marketing.

With my recent CV filled with charity work, gardening, running a book club, cooking for my family, and renovating a house, I wasn’t confident that anyone would notice my potential and offer me a job. The marketing landscape had dramatically transformed, embracing the digital era—a realm I had only experienced as a consumer. Despite my experience, the job hunt was tough; it seemed that companies were hesitant to give someone with my background a chance in this new digital world.

Finding the Opportunity

Fortunately, one company saw potential in my background and offered me a position on the condition that I complete a digital marketing diploma. This was my chance, and I seized it, studying while working. I was keen to bridge the gap between my traditional marketing experience and the digital marketing era and completed the diploma.

The role I took on was client-side and comprehensive, covering all facets of marketing, customer experience, and partner management. This experience was a great confidence boost as I realised that many of my skills were still relevant and that my life experience helped with many things like people management, storytelling, and even cooking!

After developing the role for several years and learning along the way, I decided that I wanted to focus more on content creation—a field that I think perfectly blends creativity with digital strategy.
